Stories from the record
Fuel stored behind restricted access
After the 1973 oil crisis, five tanks were built between 1976 and 1978 for emergency reserves. The public could not freely enter. These circular structures were industrial facilities before they became cultural spaces.
The tanks stopped before the World Cup
The nearby stadium prompted closure for safety. After years without a settled use, a 2013 public ideas competition helped establish the cultural-park direction. The end of industrial operation did not end the site's history.
Old steel becomes a new building
The park opened in 2017. Some tanks retained their form, while steel from others was reused for a community building. Compare the different approaches to preservation and change: recycling can happen at architectural scale.
