Stories from the record
Rebuilding after the Citizens' Hall fire
Following the 1972 fire at Citizens' Hall, a new cultural venue was developed and opened in 1978. Its origin combines cultural ambition with the tragedy of the preceding building.
Tradition in a modern structure
Eom Deok-mun's practice sought a modern interpretation of Korean traditional forms. Look at granite walls, large columns and broad outlines. The aim was not a literal timber-palace copy, but a translation into a modern performance venue.
A performance hall facing the city
The building addresses Gwanghwamun's streets and square. Passersby encounter its architecture and artworks even without attending a show. Compare day and night to see how a cultural venue participates in ordinary city life.
