Stories from the record
A home before becoming king
Gojong lived here before his accession; it was also his father Heungseon Daewongun's residence. Its origins differ from a formal state palace. Expansion after Gojong became king linked family life with national power.
Different rooms for different lives
Noandang and Norakdang were built in 1864. The former relates to the Daewongun's activities, while the latter served family life and major ceremonies. Compare the courtyards and imagine who met or lived in each space.
A record hidden in a building
Repairs in 1994 uncovered Noandang's ridge-beam inscription, documenting its name and construction context. Conservation can reveal written history as well as preserve timber. The records inside a building matter alongside its visible fabric.
