Stories from the record
Two people carried the project forward
Father Coste designed and supervised the cathedral; after his death, Father Poisnel continued the work, completing it in 1898. Brick walls and a tall bell tower created a strong landmark above the neighborhood.
A church in modern history
The cathedral also became a site of the democracy movement. In 1987 it was connected with revelations about Park Jong-chul's death under torture and wider protests. Consider why people gathered here as well as its architecture.
Read the building through light
Notice pointed arches, the long interior and light through the windows. Architecture separates its atmosphere from the busy streets outside. It remains an active place of worship, so respect services and people praying.
