Stories from the record
Not a monument built after 1945
Independence Gate was completed in 1897 through the Independence Club's efforts. It expressed late-nineteenth-century hopes for national sovereignty. Its construction date changes the meaning suggested by its familiar name.
A diplomatic place gains a new meaning
Yeongeunmun and Mohwagwan once welcomed Chinese envoys. The old gate's timber structure was removed in 1895, and Mohwagwan became Independence Hall for the club's activities. The same area acquired a different political purpose.
Read the stone remains together
Look at the gate alongside traces of the earlier Yeongeunmun. The surviving pieces help explain the transition between eras. After a photograph, study the inscriptions and symbols that express the aspirations of its builders.
